Are You Headed Toward a Burnout? 3 Things You Can Do To Stop It!

Burnout. We’ve all been there, especially as entrepreneurs. It comes with the territory of building a business from the ground up. Sometimes, we don’t have the time to wait for success to come to us, so we live and breathe the hustle-life to get our business up off the ground running. But, when it’s all work and no play, you’ll find yourself heading right back to the ground as you burn and crash.

What does burnout look like?

Well, it can be a little different for everyone and is usually a gradual process. Some signs of burnout mimic signs of stress, so you might not even realize you’re heading down the road to burnout. Fortunately, the things you can do to avoid burnout are also things you can do to help manage stress. And, since I’m all about efficiency – it’s the perfect way to kill two birds with one stone.

What can you do when you’re heading towards burnout?

Find an outlet

I hate the saying “self-care” so I’m officially changing it to “outlet”. For most of us entrepreneurs, investing in self-care is an unrealistic expectation. We’re business owners and business growers, we don’t have time for that. We’re too busy focusing on work, especially in the early stages, to carve out time for ourselves. But for the longevity of the business (and our mental health), it’s important to carve some time out just to focus on something else other than work. Maybe an evening walk, a workout, or a coffee with a friend – find something that you enjoy doing that isn’t work-related (and call it an outlet).

Set boundaries

If you talk to any business coach, they’ll tell you how important it is to set boundaries in your business. Boundaries are something that can be established at any time in your business. Boundaries can be around your working hours, your response time, or your workload. It’s about finding a balance between the work hustle and life (i.e. taking care of YOU). Maybe you’ll extend your response time from 24 hours to 48 hours. Maybe you’ll take every Friday night off so you can meet up with a friend for dinner. Maybe it’s shutting your computer off (and staying off your phone) by 6 pm every evening. Whatever boundaries you need to set, do that. And most importantly, hold yourself accountable to follow the boundaries you’ve set.

Get enough sleep

The ironic thing about burnout is that it can cause insomnia. So, it’s important to get into good sleeping habits before you hit burnout territory. Plus, sleep is SO good for your overall health, immunity, stress management, and mental health. Even if you’re struggling with sleep, try getting into a good routine. You can start by heading to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning. This will help your body (and brain) get in the routine of recognizing when it’s time to sleep. Eventually, it’ll pay off and you’ll be snoring logs!

Those are our 3 tips that you can start doing today to help you avoid heading down the road to burnout. If you’re already there, that’s okay too. These steps can change your path so you can get back on track and get back to growing that business.
