Part 1 – Finding the Brand… Is there a right way?

Branding, graphics, colours, fonts…. There are so many aspects to building a brand, and it all starts with the fundamentals of attraction, purpose, and message.

Branding can make or break a business, especially within the first few years of running. Your brand is your identity online and offline, you build the brand to advertise your business, to establish identity and most importantly to showcase how beautiful it is.

One of the most difficult parts of business for me personally has been finding my brand, getting the feeling of loving what I produce to represent my business and what it does. Ironically, this is something I do for many other businesses, they love what I do, they want to make it theirs and they can’t stop themselves by showcasing it. But, for me and my business I struggled with finding the proper fonts, colours and everything in between.

So how did I come to the decision on what I would accept? What obstacles did I face along the way, and most importantly, how did I come to love my new brand.

In this blog post, I am going to go over the beginning of DrakeCo Designs, what it started with and what it was originally, this was the fundamental step in my brand and mission, almost as important as establishing the idea that I wanted to run a business. That I wanted to help others achieve their goals, and that I wanted to be my own boss.

In the beginning it all started on a website called UpWork, an online source of freelancers and job posting from companies and people looking for help from a variety of people with different skill sets. Here I began work with one of my first clients Hello Life Academy, providing web support to their members and them. Back then I operated just under my name as the business name, nothing fancy or creative. My brand and site were pretty dull, dark, plain, something I thought I liked, and worked for the time being.

Although the brand was working for me, I still always had this thought in the back of my mind that it just wasn’t right, something was off. Was it the colours? Was it the name? Was it the fact that I had no images of myself or just that social media was non-existent?

I couldn’t figure out what I didn’t like, so I did what any tech-savvy person would do, I started looking around online, digging into websites that were within my field, searching high and low to see what others were doing.

I finally established that the colours were the issue, so I started drafting up a new look and feel. I spent months getting it perfected if not close to a year. Then once complete, I absolutely hated it within two months, it was all wrong, it didn’t seem to fit me, or my industry. It was just too out there, not out there, but too off, to impersonal. The problem was, my business was starting to grow, my time was needed for clients, and my website was left behind. I continued to tell myself that it will get done later, I will revisit it. But never did.

And then a few months had gone by, and finally I had some spare time, I spent hours looking at every part of my website, trying to see how a typical visitor would flow through, analyzing the top visits on each page and trying to figure out what was working and what wasn’t. Then it came to me, it was the name, not the colours. Although many businesses operate under just a First Name Last Name basis, it just wasn’t working for me. Not to mention every time I did a Google query I would get movie starts, musicians (Drake in specific) then finally me. I was competing with keywords that were way to over used. So, I changed it.
